Shuting Yao is a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Media Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the Moody College of Communication and a Master’s degree in Statistics, both from UT Austin.
Shuting specializes in computer-mediated communication (CMC) and interpersonal/intercultural communication. Her research integrates computational, quantitative, and qualitative methods, contributing to a deeper understanding of how people connect and communicate across diverse contexts.
Her work has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Western Journal of Communication, and the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research. She has also presented her findings at prominent conferences such as the International Communication Association (ICA) and the National Communication Association (NCA) and serves as a peer reviewer for academic journals.
At the Center for Media Engagement, Shuting collaborates on projects that foster connective democracy. She focuses on bridging divides between media and the public, scientists and journalists, and individuals with differing political perspectives.
Outside of work, Shuting is a passionate Longhorns football fan and enjoys running and exploring new music.
